You are currently viewing Where are Millennials and Gen Zs getting their news?

OK, I’ve slowly relented to the fact that I’m no longer part of  “the future of America”. As a proud member of the X Generation, I reluctantly pass the torch to this nations actual youth – Millennials and Gen Z – who have already been shaping our world and setting things in place for my (quickly approaching) retirement years.

As a marketer, and someone who was there at the true beginning of the digitization of everything, I consider myself pretty savvy when it comes to emerging technology, new platforms, information delivery systems. But, when it comes to getting news, I guess I’m still a dinosaur.  The hard data shows that younger audiences are turning to social media platforms like Instagram for news and information. This shift presents both challenges and opportunities for businesses of all sizes, from SMBs to large corporations, requiring a fundamental rethinking of marketing strategies.

The Instagram Information Revolution

The migration of news consumption to social media platforms, particularly Instagram, represents a paradigm shift in how we reach and engage with audiences. Let’s examine the key statistics:

  • 30% of Instagram users regularly consume news on the platform.
  • 72% of Instagram news consumers receive information from friends, family, and acquaintances on the app.
  • 65% of Gen Z (18-24) and 61% of younger Millennials (25-34) cite social media as a preferred news source.
  • Only 39% of 18-24 year-olds prefer traditional TV news.

Strategic Implications for Businesses

SMBs (Small and Medium-sized Businesses)

  1. Agile Content Creation
SMBs must develop the capability to produce timely, relevant content that aligns with current events and trends. This requires a more flexible and responsive approach to content creation.
  2. Leveraging User-Generated Content
Encouraging customers to create and share content can help SMBs overcome resource limitations while fostering community engagement.
  3. Micro-Influencer Partnerships
Collaborating with niche influencers can provide SMBs with authentic voices to reach targeted audiences cost-effectively.

Large Corporations

  1. Decentralized Content Strategies
Corporate marketing teams need to empower regional or product-specific teams to create localized, timely content that resonates with specific audience segments.
  2. Advanced Analytics Integration
Large corporations should invest in sophisticated analytics tools to track engagement across platforms and adjust strategies in real-time.
  3. Cross-Platform Content Synergy
Developing content that seamlessly integrates across various social media platforms while maintaining brand consistency is crucial for corporations with diverse product lines.

Start with a Content Strategy Overhaul

  • Prioritizing short-form video content, such as Reels, which generate 2x more reach than other content types on Instagram.
  • Crafting compelling narratives that can be told in bite-sized formats.
  • Utilizing Instagram’s diverse features like Stories, IGTV, and Shops to create a multi-faceted presence.

Real-Time Marketing

The immediacy of social media news consumption demands agile marketing responses to current events. This requires:

  • Establishing rapid response teams capable of creating and approving content quickly.
  • Developing guidelines for addressing sensitive topics or breaking news.
  • Implementing social listening tools to identify trending topics and sentiment in real-time.

Platform-Specific Optimization

Understanding Instagram’s algorithm and features is now as crucial as traditional SEO. Businesses must:

  • Optimize content for discoverability through strategic use of hashtags and keywords.
  • Leverage Instagram’s shopping features to create seamless purchasing experiences.
  • Utilize Instagram Insights to refine posting schedules and content types.

Challenges to Address

  2. Attention Span: Marketers must master the art of conveying complex messages in visually appealing, easily digestible formats.
  3. Brand Safety: Ensuring content appears alongside credible sources is crucial for maintaining brand reputation in a fast-paced news environment.
  4. Regulatory Compliance: As platforms evolve, businesses must stay abreast of changing regulations around advertising and data privacy.

The trend towards social media news consumption, particularly on Instagram, is likely to continue. To stay competitive, businesses must:

  1. Invest in robust social media marketing teams with diverse skill sets.
  2. Develop platform-specific content strategies that can adapt quickly to changing algorithms and user behaviors.
